Maternity Photography in Split

Maternity photography is more than just a memory of your bump. It’s a quiet season between everything that was and everything that is yet to come. A time when your body changes, and your feelings grow deeper, slower, and more tender. Sometimes you feel beautiful and strong; other times, tired and vulnerable. All of this is your story, and you are so welcome at my maternity sessions.

I’m curious about how you instinctively place your hand on your belly. How you pause. How you smile for no reason. How your partner stands by you, often closer than ever. Those tiny, unplanned moments that happen on their own – they are the heart of authentic maternity photography.

A Relaxed Session Without Posing

This session requires no preparation, no experience, or “knowing what to do in front of the camera.” You don’t need to know how to pose or think about where to put your hands. It’s enough to just show up as you are that day, in your own rhythm. My goal is for you to feel safe and natural throughout the maternity shoot.

This guide is here to support you. To help you feel more confident, calm, and free of pressure. Read it now, and if you like, come back to it a few days before your due date. There are no rules you must follow – take what makes sense to you and let go of the rest.

Your story told through the lens

For many women (and couples), this is the first time they are being photographed in such an intimate, personal season of life. It’s completely normal if you feel a bit uncertain at first or if everything feels new. Throughout the entire session, I will lead you gently, with small cues and ideas that help you feel comfortable and relaxed.

In the end, we don’t create photos that “have to look” a certain way, but rather timeless memories of a significant time. Photos that will later remind you of how you felt while waiting for someone you hadn’t met yet, but already loved so much.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BEFORE YOUR MATERNITY SESSION

01. What to wear for your maternity session?

If there’s one part of the preparation that causes the most overthinking for most clients, it’s maternity session outfits. And that’s completely normal. What you wear has a significant impact on the final result – not so the clothes stand out, but quite the opposite: to ensure the focus remains entirely on you.

Simplicity and neutral tones

When it comes to maternity photography, I always recommend simplicity. Neutral and soft shades like white, beige, cream, grey, or soft pink help keep the focus on you, your facial expressions, and pure emotion. The goal is for the clothes not to “tell their own story,” but to let yours shine through.

Flowy dresses and comfort

Flowy dresses are always an excellent choice. They move beautifully, add softness to the photos, and naturally highlight your baby bump without feeling stiff. Most importantly, you should feel feminine and comfortable in what you wear, as that inner feeling translates best in photographs.

Harmony with nature and the surroundings

For outdoor sessions – whether it’s the beaches around Split, olive groves, or mountains, neutral colors prevent “competing” with the environment. Nature is already rich in color, so calmer clothing tones ensure everything looks harmonious. If others are joining the session (partner or children), a neutral color palette makes it easy to coordinate without anyone visually “clashing.”

A little tip: This doesn’t mean colors are forbidden! If a certain color feels like “you,” we can definitely incorporate it – it’s just important that the other pieces remain more subdued. The goal isn’t perfect “matching,” but rather a sense of visual balance.

02. How to choose the location for your maternity session?

When you ask me how to choose a location for the shoot, my answer is always the same – choose the place where you feel most comfortable. There is no “better” or “worse” option; no place should be chosen just because it’s popular. What matters is that the location reflects your personality and style.

Maternity session in nature or in the comfort of your home?

Some women love being outdoors – the sea, the air, a gentle walk, and the sense of spaciousness. Others prefer the quiet of an indoor space and the intimacy offered by a lifestyle home session. Both options have their own charm:

⟡ Outdoors: We take advantage of the natural backdrop and the softness of daylight.

⟡ Indoors: We focus on your everyday life and the peaceful anticipation in familiar surroundings.

Adapting to light and the season

If we decide on an outdoor session, we always adapt to the light. In the summer, this usually means the “golden hour” – early morning or late afternoon, when the temperature is more pleasant and the crowds are smaller. During other parts of the year, it’s easier to find quiet spots, allowing the session to be completely relaxed and unhurried.

A mutual agreement: If you’re not sure what to choose, don’t worry. We’ll decide everything together before the session. We’ll talk about your wishes and the season, and I will suggest locations in Split and the surrounding area that will best suit your story.

03. Should we bring anything with us to the session?

While the focus is on your smile and anticipation, small details can add a special layer to the story of your new beginning. If you already have items that hold emotional value for you, feel free to bring them to your maternity shoot.

Your personal details

These can be little things you are already cherishing with love:

⟡ Ultrasound photos (the first glimpse of the baby).

⟡ First baby shoes or a favorite outfit.

⟡ Special jewelry or a keepsake you bought as a memento. Such items often naturally find their place in the frame and make maternity photos even more personal.

My support with details

To give the photos that soft, timeless feel, I often bring subtle props that easily fit into any story:

          ⟡ Soft blankets and textures.

          ⟡ Vintage baskets.

⟡ Fresh flowers or other unobtrusive accessories.

The most important tip: Don’t overthink it. If an item means something to you and makes you happy – bring it. If you decide to come with nothing at all, your photos will still be exactly what they need to be: honest, warm, and eternal.

04. When is the best time for a maternity session?

Most often, a maternity session is planned between the 30th and 36th week of pregnancy. During this period, the belly is beautifully rounded and prominent, and most women still feel energetic enough for gentle movement, walking, and relaxed posing without much effort.

First pregnancy vs. subsequent pregnancies

The rhythm of every pregnancy is different, so the timing is often adjusted:

⟡ First pregnancy: Usually, the period around the 34th or 35th week is the perfect moment when the bump is in full glory and you still have enough energy.

⟡ Second (and every subsequent) pregnancy: The body often reacts faster, so maternity photography in this case can be done a bit earlier, around the 32nd or 33rd week.

Twin or more demanding pregnancies

In the case of a twin pregnancy, or if you feel that extra caution is needed, we plan the photoshoot earlier – sometimes even between the 24th and 28th week. The goal is to capture that period while you still feel comfortable and before the body tires too quickly.

No strict rules: The most important thing to me is that you feel good and safe. That’s why we always stay in touch, talk about how you’re feeling, and together choose the date that suits you best at that moment.

05. What if it rains on the day of the session?

Weather is one of the few factors we cannot control, but that’s why we always have a Plan B. If rain is forecast for your date, we will first assess the situation together and decide what works best for you at that moment.

The charm of photography in light rain

If the rain isn’t heavy and there’s no wind, maternity photography in such conditions can be incredibly striking and unique. Light rain brings:

⟡ Softer, more even light that is very flattering for the skin.

⟡ A calmer atmosphere and a sense of intimacy that is hard to achieve in bright sunlight.

⟡ A romantic mood that gives your memories a special, cinematic charm.

Flexibility and rescheduling

If it’s more important to you that the shoot takes place in dry weather, or if you simply don’t feel comfortable in the rain, the session can be easily moved to another day. In these situations, we always look for the solution that suits you best and arrange a new date as soon as the forecast allows.

Your comfort is the priority: The most important thing to me is that you feel relaxed during the shoot. Rain can be a beautiful backdrop, but if that idea doesn’t sit well with you, we will wait for a sunnier day without any pressure.
