Engagement Photography in Split
Your guide to a relaxed session
An engagement session is not a rehearsal. Nor is it a warm-up. And it isn’t just a series of pretty pictures. It is a little piece of your life, captured exactly as it is in that very moment.
I am drawn to:
⟡ How you look at each other and how you smile.
⟡ How your hands naturally find one another.
⟡ That feeling when you are simply comfortable being where you are, together.
It is in these moments that photographs gain depth and meaning, going far beyond just a beautiful frame.
This guide was created so you can feel more secure and relaxed before your session. Read it now, and feel free to revisit it a few days before our date. Inside, you will find simple guidelines to help you hold onto what truly matters, because the best photos are taken when you stop thinking about them.
Debunking the “unposed” myth
For many couples, this is their first time being professionally photographed, so it is completely normal if it feels a little unusual at first. I often hear phrases like “I am not photogenic” or “we don’t know how to pose”, and it almost always turns out that this couldn’t be further from the truth.
How do we work during the session?
⟡ Gentle guidance:I guide you through the process using small “prompts” that leave room for genuine, natural moments.
⟡ No forced poses:I am there to direct your gaze or adjust a hand if needed, but I won’t micro-manage your every move.
⟡ Focus on you:The goal is for the photos to look and feel like you, rather than something staged.
Throughout the session, there will be space for walking, talking, laughing, and moments that just happen along the way. In the end, you will have a collection of photographs that remain as a keepsake of a beautiful, significant chapter of your life.
FAQ Before Your Engagement Session
What to Wear for Your Engagement Session?
When choosing your outfits, what is currently trending is far less important than how everything feels together within the space.
Materials and movement: Pieces that flow beautifully always work best – longer dresses, soft fabrics, and layers create a sense of movement and a softer look without the need for posing.
Colors and coordination:
⟡ Neutral colors: These are always a safe bet because the focus remains on you and your connection.
⟡ Coordination: If one of you is wearing a pattern, let the other outfit stay more subtle.
⟡ Two outfits: If you want variety, feel free to bring one casual and one more elegant set of clothes.
Footwear: Choose shoes that allow you to move freely. If we are shooting on grass or rocks, flats or even going barefoot are often a better choice than heels. You can always bring a spare pair of comfy shoes for walking between locations.
Dressing for the weather: It is important to dress appropriately for the temperature. When you are comfortable, it shows in the photos. And when you are not, it shows even more.
If you are in doubt about your choices, feel free to reach out before the session. I would be happy to help with advice or just confirm that you are on the right track.
How to Choose a Location for Your Engagement Session?
Are you more of a nature lover, or are you drawn to a city vibe? The location should reflect you and your relationship – the place where you feel most like yourselves.
Planning together: Whether you want your session in nature, by the sea, in the woods, or in the city, I will gladly suggest locations that match the atmosphere you want to capture. We arrange everything together, according to your wishes.
The power of light and timing: The time of our session is just as important as the location itself. Sunrise and sunset are the most beautiful parts of the day:
⟡ Soft and warm light: It creates a special, romantic atmosphere that is impossible to achieve in the middle of the day.
⟡ Privacy: During the summer season, I often recommend sunrise (especially for seaside locations).
⟡ Peace and quiet: An early morning session allows you to relax without crowds, passersby, or curious looks.
Is an Indoor Session Possible (Cafe, Restaurant, at Home, Hotel)?
The idea of shooting in a cafe or restaurant sounds appealing, but in reality, it often brings certain challenges like venue rules, extra fees, or disturbing other guests.
Why restaurants are often not ideal:
⟡ Light and position: It is difficult to guarantee a table with good natural light.
⟡ Privacy: The space can rarely be used freely without disturbing other people.
⟡ Rushed pace: Instead of a relaxed session, it often comes down to just a few quick shots.
My recommendations for a more intimate atmosphere: If you want that warm, “indoor” feel, much better options are:
⟡ Your home: A session at home carries a special warmth and gives the most personal touch to your photos.
⟡ Hotel room or apartment: A great choice for a tidier, more elegant ambiance with plenty of peace and privacy.
The goal is to choose a space where you can relax without stress or rushing. If you are unsure, we will go through all the options together.
Should We Bring Anything With Us to the Session?
Sometimes, small, everyday things can add warmth and personality to the photos. Details often help you relax and give the session a natural rhythm.
Ideas for your basket:
⟡ The classics: A bottle of your favorite wine, glasses for a toast, or a bouquet of flowers.
⟡ Warmth: A jacket to throw over your shoulders, a scarf, or something to snuggle into if it gets chilly.
⟡ Playfulness: Ice cream, takeout pizza, or a beer—whatever feels like “you”.
⟡ Your story: A bicycle, a motorcycle, a guitar, or vintage vinyl records.
Pets are welcome: For many couples, a dog is a part of the family, and it is completely natural to want them to be part of the story.
Note: Please let me know in advance if you plan to bring your dog so we can choose a pet-friendly location and avoid any unpleasant interruptions.
None of this is mandatory. These are all just ideas, and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and that the photos remain true to you.
What if It Rains on the Day of the Session?
Weather is something we cannot control, but we can always have a plan. If rain is in the forecast, first we will assess the situation together and see what suits you best.
Option 1: Embrace the rain (Plan A) If the rain is light and it is not windy, photographing in the light rain can be incredibly beautiful and unique.
⟡ A special charm: We get softer light and a calmer atmosphere.
⟡ Intimacy: It creates a sense of closeness that rarely happens in “perfect” weather.
⟡ Romantic mood: The rain slows down the pace and provides a completely different backdrop for your story.
Option 2: Reschedule (Plan B) If it is important to you that the session takes place in dry weather, the date can be rescheduled for another day. In such situations:
⟡ We always look for a solution that works best for you.
⟡ We arrange a new date as soon as the forecast allows.
The most important thing to me is that you feel comfortable and relaxed during the session. If the idea of rain doesn’t feel right to you, there is absolutely no problem waiting for a sunnier day.
