Family Photography in Split

Family photography is not about a perfectly posed picture. It doesn’t have to be quiet, still, or “under control”. It’s about your rhythm, your energy, and the way you are together – exactly as you are in this very moment.

I don’t look for perfect smiles, but for the moments you share.

During family sessions, I don’t wait for the moment when everyone looks at the camera at the same time. I am drawn to how your child runs toward you, how they hide behind your leg, and how you laugh while trying to gather everyone in one place. These small, unplanned moments are often the ones that mean the most later on.

Your guide to a relaxed family session

I created this guide so you can arrive at your session feeling calm, relaxed, and without the pressure to “perform”.

I often hear worries like:

⟡ “What if the kids won’t cooperate?”

⟡ “What if they won’t sit still?”

⟡ “What if it all turns into chaos?”

And almost always, it turns out that the true beauty is hidden right within that “chaos”. Kids are allowed to be kids. You don’t have to pretend or control every single moment.

Gentle guidance through play and movement

I will guide you through the entire process softly and naturally. I might ask you to step closer or slow down, but I never direct your connection. The goal is for the photographs to preserve your true dynamic, not to quiet it down.

Throughout the session, there will be plenty of room for movement, play, and breaks whenever needed. In the end, you won’t just have photos of a “perfect day” – you will have a story of a real, beautiful season of your family’s life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What to wear for an outdoor family session?

Once you book your session, one of the first questions that pops up is: what to wear? While coordinating the whole family might seem complicated, in practice, it’s much simpler than it looks.

1. Comfort above all

The most important rule is comfort. An outdoor session means moving, playing, and sitting on the grass.

⟡ Avoid: Blazers, ties, high heels, and clothes that “aren’t allowed to get dirty”.

⟡ Choose: Relaxed fits that allow you to move freely and hug each other easily.

2. A nature-loving color palette

Neutral tones and muted shades won’t distract, keeping the focus exactly where it belongs – on your faces and emotions.

⟡ Ideal colors: Beige, cream, brown, olive green, sand, warm taupe, or muted pastels.

⟡ A pop of color: If you want something a bit more striking, go for rust, mustard, burgundy, or dusty pink.

Tip: You don’t all need to be dressed identically; it’s more about your outfits complementing each other.

3. Fabrics and details

I always prefer natural materials like cotton, linen, and wool.

⟡ Flowy dresses: They catch the movement beautifully and add a gentle softness to the photos.

⟡ What to avoid: Large logos, bold patterns, and cartoon characters. These details make the photographs feel less timeless.

4. Practical tips

⟡ Footwear: Make sure it’s suitable for the terrain (grass, woods, rocks).

⟡ Spare clothes: Always bring an extra set of clothes for the little ones – a small outdoor mishap shouldn’t ruin the shoot.

If you are unsure about your outfit combinations or have any doubts, feel free to reach out before our session. I will be more than happy to help you.

How to choose the location for a family session?

When it comes to family photography, the location isn’t there to be “perfect,” but to allow you to relax and be together. Places that offer room to move, play, and take little breaks work best.

The spot for spontaneity

Parks, meadows, forests, olive groves, or coastal walks offer enough space for things to unfold naturally.

⟡ What we look for: Places to walk, run, and hug.

⟡ The goal: To capture those small moments that simply cannot be planned.

Adapting to the age of your children

When choosing a location, it’s important to consider the age of your little ones:

⟡ Babies and toddlers: Quieter locations with less crowd and noise work better.

⟡ Older children: They often enjoy larger open spaces where they can explore.

The Golden Hour and the light

The time of the session plays a huge role in the look of your photographs.

⟡ The most beautiful light: Late afternoon, just before sunset (the so-called Golden Hour).

⟡ Comfort: During the warmer months, we avoid the strongest sun and crowds to make sure everyone stays comfortable.

I’m here to help: If you’re not sure what would work best, I will gladly suggest locations that fit your family and your children’s dynamic. The goal is for the session to be an experience, not a chore.

Can we have the session in our family home?

Absolutely. An in-home session is often one of the most beautiful and relaxed choices. In your own space, everyone is more natural – the kids are just being themselves, there is no adjusting to a new environment, and there’s no pressure to “sit still and behave.”

Your home doesn’t have to be perfect

Many parents worry their home doesn’t look like it belongs in a magazine, but that truly doesn’t matter.

⟡ The focus: We usually photograph where you feel most comfortable – in the living room, the master bedroom, or the kids’ room.

⟡ Stress-free: You don’t need to worry about the lighting or a little everyday clutter. If needed, we will simply move a few things out of the background together, and that’s it.

The best time for an in-home session

I usually schedule in-home sessions in the morning (around 10 AM).

⟡ Why: The natural light is the most flattering then, and children are usually well-rested and in a better mood.

⟡ Flexibility: Of course, we can always adjust the time to fit your specific family rhythm.

Toys and the environment

I recommend selecting a few books or meaningful toys in advance, and simply putting the rest out of sight. If toys are scattered everywhere, it becomes much harder for the kids to focus.

Should we bring anything with us to the session?

You don’t need to pack a heavy backpack “just in case,” but you shouldn’t come empty-handed either. The goal is to bring the things that usually help your day run smoothly, so the focus remains entirely on your connection.

Everyday essentials for a smooth session

It’s always a good idea to bring items that are part of your normal family dynamic:

⟡ Water and wipes (always handy after running around).

⟡ Small snacks (for a quick break and an energy boost).

⟡ A spare shirt (especially for the little ones – nature is unpredictable).

Details that tell your story

If your kids have something they love taking outside, feel free to bring it. These aren’t props; they are a piece of their everyday life:

     ⟡ A bike or a scooter.

⟡ A balloon or a favorite picture book. Things like these give the photographs the feel of a real, lived moment rather than a “staged scene.”

And most importantly: You don’t need to know exactly what will happen in advance. Whatever helps you feel calm and relaxed is welcome, and we will easily adapt to everything else as we go.

What if my child isn’t in the mood or won’t cooperate?

This is one of the most common questions, and it’s completely understandable. Children aren’t at the session to “cooperate”; they are there to simply be themselves. And that is perfectly fine.

No pressure, no forcing

If a child isn’t feeling it, we never force them. We don’t demand smiles, and we don’t create pressure.

⟡ Space and time: We give your child the freedom to join in whenever they feel comfortable.

⟡ Flexibility: The session adapts to the child, not the other way around. Sometimes that means playing, sometimes taking a break, and sometimes just watching from the sidelines.

When the pressure fades, so does the resistance

My experience has shown that kids quickly sense when they aren’t being pushed into “posing.”

⟡ It’s all part of the process: Nothing is ever considered a “problem.”

⟡ Honest moments: What remains are real, genuine moments – exactly the way they are meant to be.

Can we include grandparents or a family pet?

If it’s important to you to include your extended family or four-legged friends in some of the photos, they are absolutely welcome – they are a meaningful part of your story.

How we usually structure the session?

To keep the atmosphere relaxed, here is how we usually plan it:

⟡ Shared moments: We dedicate a specific part of the session to capturing photos with grandparents or your pets.

⟡ Focus on the core family: We reserve the rest of the time exclusively for you, ensuring the session stays calm and unhurried.

A quick note: I just ask that you let me know in advance who will be.

How long does a family session last?

A family session usually takes about one to two hours, depending on your family’s dynamic, the age of your children, and everyone’s mood that day.

Your rhythm is my guide

We don’t watch the clock. The goal is for everyone to relax and for the kids to find the experience fun, rather than overwhelming.

⟡ Breaks are always welcome: If we need to pause, take a little breather, or just slow down, that is completely fine.

⟡ Adapting to your pace: I always adjust to your natural rhythm, ensuring the session flows in a way that makes the most sense for your family.

What does a session with a baby look like?

A session with a baby has no script. And that is actually the best news. We don’t wait for a “perfect” moment, and we never try to force your baby into something that doesn’t feel right for them at that time.

Following the baby’s rhythm

Everything unfolds just like a normal day in your life:

⟡ If the baby is sleeping: We capture the quiet peace and warmth as they sleep.

⟡ If they are feeding: It’s simply a natural, beautiful part of your shared story.

⟡ If they are awake and fussy: The moments you spend soothing them in your arms often create the most profound and emotional photographs.

No expectations, no pressure

I expect absolutely nothing from your baby. You simply hold, rock, change, or comfort them, and I document those very real, tender moments.

⟡ Duration: Sometimes it’s a bit shorter, sometimes we take plenty of breaks, and sometimes everything unfolds naturally in just a few simple moments.

⟡ Your role: All you need to do is just be there, together.

What if the weather isn’t ideal?

Sometimes the weather just has a mind of its own – and that is completely fine. We don’t chase perfect skies or try to “push through” a session at all costs.

Finding beauty in “imperfect” conditions

If it’s cloudy, a bit crisp, or slightly breezy, it often works to your advantage:

⟡ Softer light: It creates a calmer, more intimate atmosphere in the photographs.

⟡ Comfort: Children are often more relaxed without the harsh sun, allowing everything to flow at a slower, more natural pace.

What if the forecast is genuinely bad?

If we feel the weather would take away from the experience, we will simply reschedule.

⟡ No fighting the forecast: Your session should be part of a beautiful day, not a source of stress.

⟡A shared decision: We keep an eye on the weather, but more importantly, I listen to you.
